It is wonderful to have your children in my English 1 class.  This is my 33rd year teaching.  I have worked for Davidson County Schools for 10 years.  My prior professional experience has been in Miami, Florida.  For 22 years I have worked in elementary, middle school and adult education. I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources. The areas of certification in the State of Florida is in Elementary Education, ESL, Middle School and English 6th grade to 9th grade.  In the State of North Carolina my certification is in English 6th grade to 9th grade.

Please ask your sons/daughters for the REMIND messaging program that will help you keep abreast of the notifications I will be sending the students.  I do keep up with my webpage if you should need information as to what the students are studying and working on. Please visit weekly and check the Power School for your child's grades, missing assignments and any questions you might have about their grades.

My expectations of the students is to try their best and put forth effort in every assignment they have and to take advantage of correcting their mistakes when given the opportunity. All students are expected to have an interactive 5 subject notebook, an agenda and all materials necessary to be a success in high school.

1 (5) subject spiral notebook, 180-200 sheets
paper,pencils/pens(black or blue),erasers,glue sticks,scissors,highlighters,sticky notes in multi colors
3 ring notebook to keep your work and assignments

Homework
May 22 they will have a homework article assignment due Friday,May 26. Study for your vocabulary test Unit 9, it will be JUjne 2. Friday.

Weekly Assignments
Students are working on a novel, The Lottery Rose, we will cover literary works and strategies.  Their assignments will all be in their interactive notebook in the stories and poem section.
INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK VOCABULARY SECTION PAGES 20-26 and the Stories/Poem section will be due June 2.

Homework

Please check their agendas daily, the homework is written on the board.  It is the students responsibility to copy down the written or study assignments.  They are to study everyday their vocabulary words Unit 5, test will be Friday, Nov. 7.  I have asked them to purchase their own glue stick.

Assignments

The novel that we are reading is, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  They will receive a study guide to have for the test.  We have discussed with students the depression era in the United States and the Jim Crow laws.
They will have a variety of activities to collaborate and work on in class daily.  I urge all parents to daily ask their children what was done in class, please become involved.
Interactive Notebooks, Grammar Section the pages that are to be done by Friday, Nov. 21 are pages 21,25,26,27. 


Vocabulary

Unit 5 will begin Oct. 29, vocabulary tests are given every 2 weeks, we work on the words daily in class. We read a passage in class that contains all the words and we identify the context clues. They study the words at home daily. The test for Unit 5 will be Nov. 7, Friday.  The pages in their interactive notebook for the vocabulary section to be completed and done by Nov. 21 are pages 8-9.

Grading Procedures

All majors grades will be tests, projects and book reports.  The rest of the assignments will be minor grades.  All major grades are 60% and minor grades are 40%.
