Today we honor and remember Coach Pete Jones who passed away peacefully at his home in Welcome at the age of 92. For more than 30 years, he was so much more than just a teacher, coach, and athletic director at North Davidson High School. Coach Jones was a mentor who shaped generations of student-athletes with his honesty, toughness, and unwavering belief in their potential.
Coach Jones was the Varsity Men’s Basketball Coach for 31 years. His teams accumulated 491 wins and nine conference championships. His 1975 team won the Western North Carolina Athletic Association State Title. He was also the Head Baseball Coach for 14 years, earning 226 wins, and the 1967 Western North Carolina Athletic Association State Championship. In 1997, the gymnasium was named in his honor and will forever be known as Pete Jones Gymnasium, and in July of 2022, the court is now known as “The Pete”.
Thank you, Coach Jones, for the example you set, the impact you made, and the lives you touched. Your legacy will live in every student athlete you shaped.
